Hi @JoelRobinow , it really depends on how you are able to transfer the right expressivity to the instrument. Also, it depends on the SWAM instrument.

For Woodwinds, the combination keyboard + breath controller is the one that provides the best result, if you are a keyboard player and if you are able to breath miming a real wind player. The BC and BBC2 from TEControl are good breath controllers.

Of course, if you are a real wind player, the best controller for you is an Electronic Wind Controller, like the AKAI EWI, Aodyo Sylphyo or Roland Aerophone.

Stefano, the designer of the SWAM technology, got used to the expression pedal + mod-wheel for vibrato. He masters the pedal with any kind of expressive instrument, miming the breath with Woodwinds and the bow strokes with the Strings.

The Seaboard and the LinnStrument are two powerful expressive controllers, but they require A LOT of practice to be mastered in the right way: the reason is that they provide multiple dimensions of control with the same finger. At first this can be seen as an advantage, but for controlling realistic instruments, this can be a drawback. In a real acoustic instrument usually the fingering is independent from the expressivity: on the woodwinds the breath is independent from the keys / holes, on the strings the bow speed is independent from the fingering on the fingerboard.

Finally, you may want to consider alternative controllers, like Pen2Bow for the strings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVwumjmznBw

Best!

A pedal and a mod-wheel? Isn´t that a little bit rudimentary? How many CCs can you control at a time, two?

I find it hard to believe THE ultimate controller for SWAM instruments - Expressive Touché - was not mentioned. It offers unparalleled control of 4 CCs with just one hand.

Seriously, give it a go.

You have never seen Stefano Lucato playing ;-) We will publish some videos recorded during the NAMM Show.

Of course, Touché is another good controller.

Be aware! Have multiple CCs under a single hand or finger is not always an advantage. As I said, for controlling realistic instruments, this can be a drawback...
Having multiple controllers at the same time is an advantage when you can guarantee that they are truly independent.

Best!
